A masterful debut from one of England's boldest and brightest new talents, Sally El Hosaini's MY BROTHER THE DEVIL stars James Floyd as Rashid, a young man from a traditional Arab family who runs with a gang that rules the streets of Hackney, one of London's most ethnically-mixed and historically volatile neighborhoods. Rashid's younger brother, Mo, (Fadi Elsayed) idolizes his handsome, charismatic older brother and dreams of following in his footsteps, but Rashid envisions a different life for Mo and insists that he stay away from gang life and stick to his studies. When Rashid forms a bond with Sayyid (Said Taghmaoui), an older man of similar background who is now a successful photographer, he is introduced to a world he never knew existed. But, just as he decides he wants out of his dead-end life on the streets, Mo decides he wants in, and starts doing drug runs behind Rashid's back. Headed on a collision course of conflicting desires, each young man is forced to face himself and confront the brother he thought he knew. (c) Paladin

Review For Movie My Brother The Devil
It's an impressive debut by a director blessed with a strong voice and a knack for bringing a specific cultural milieu to vibrant life, defying convention even while working within its strict limits.
Rick Groen-Globe and Mail

My Brother the Devil brings a fresh and mature perspective to a story of shifting relationships between siblings, clearly marking the Egyptian-Welsh writer-director as someone on a path to greater things.
Linda Barnard-Toronto Star

A story of brothers that's both tough and tender.
Michael O'Sullivan-Washington Post

"My Brother the Devil" is a promising debut that marks El Hosaini as a filmmaker to watch, but one still very much in the developmental stages.
Mark Olsen-Los Angeles Times

For at least part of its length, "My Brother the Devil" brings refreshing changes to a genre badly in need of them.
Farran Smith Nehme-New York Post

Nuances of faith, politics and sexual identity enrich what initially presents as a classic good son-bad son tale, and although the film's melting-pot patois is occasionally too dense to decipher, we get the gist.
Jeannette Catsoulis-New York Times

An often gripping coming-of-age story involving rival gangs, societal pressures, self-discovery, brotherly affection, and drugs.
Eric D. Snider-About.com

The attention El Hosaini gives to the physical structures in this neighbourhood is a poignant reminder of the lack of focus there generally is on the people who live inside them.
Nathalie Atkinson-National Post

The film takes an insightful look at subtle cultural and socioeconomic differences, as well as similarities, during troubled economic times.
Todd Jorgenson-Cinemalogue.com

Ultimately feels a little flat, but there's promise that the director will carry on to stronger work, with several scenes here delivering exceptional grace and texture that all but guarantees a bright cinematic future.
Brian Orndorf-Blu-ray.com

Sally El Hosaini shows a deft hand in her story telling and direction belying her inexperience behind the camera.
Robin Clifford-Reeling Reviews

When a both a dog and friend of Rashid's are killed in a violent gang encounter, El Hosaini frames both of their lifeless bodies on the street in a powerful image that tells of two innocents both bred to fight.
Laura Clifford-Reeling Reviews

[El Hosaini] has a devil of a time getting a handle on this complicated story.
Chris Hewitt (St. Paul)-St. Paul Pioneer Press

Familiar youth crime/coming-of-age framework, novel setting and focus group.
Kelly Vance-East Bay Express

El Housani's freshman effort is certainly visually accomplished, but there's precious little meat on its bones.
Michael McDonagh-culturevulture.net

Highly recommended. (Writer-director) El Hosaini handles the various volatile relationships within the film with intelligence and sensitivity.
Fr. Chris Carpenter-Movie Dearest

An engrossing debut from director Sally El Hosaini, My Brother the Devil is as authentic, emotionally complex and powerfully acted as any film you'll see this year.
Simon Brookfield-We Got This Covered

Unsure performances and some decades-old gangster-film stereotypes hamper this acute, beautifully shot portrait of Egyptian teenagers fighting to survive in a rough London neighborhood.
Chris Barsanti-Film Journal International

With My Brother the Devil, writer-director Sally El Hosaini tells a story both operatic in its implications and quotidian in its sensory, day-to-day details.
Steve Macfarlane-Slant Magazine

Movie Overview For My Brother The Devil

Fourteen-year-old Mo is a lonely, sensitive boy whose hunger for the rant and banter of buddies makes him prone to tread dangerous territories. He idolizes his handsome older brother, Rashid, a charismatic, well-respected member of a local gang, whose drug dealing enables “Rash” to provide for his family. Aching to be seen as a tough guy himself, Mo takes a job that unlocks a fateful turn of events and forces the brothers to confront their inner demons. It turns out that hate is easy. It is love and understanding that take real courage.

Review For Movie Newlyweeds
Shaka King's low-budget debut feature is slim on plot but rich in attitude and on-the-ground detail of New York neighborhood life.
Ben Sachs-Chicago Reader

A smoky, jazzy, biting and heartfelt comedy about two young people, one love affair, American life, African-American life, Brooklyn and - oh, yeah - weed.
Andrew O'Hehir-Salon.com

Newlyweeds is a movie of excellent riffs, understated timing, and memorable performances.
J. Hoberman-ARTINFO.com

The movie at last finds its legs in a windup that has great compassion for these sweet, lost souls.
Farran Smith Nehme-New York Post

More a series of darkly comic vignettes than a conventional romance, King's exploration of chemically altered human chemistry is amusing if slight, and his two leads are appealingly solid, especially Cheatom.
Robert Abele-Los Angeles Times

"Newlyweeds," for all its freshness, never really lands. It remains suspended in a haze of secondhand smoke.
Stephen Holden-New York Times

Newlyweeds is a rare movie about stoners that treats pot addiction seriously, carving out a space of its own in a naturalistic middle ground between the familiar standards of surreal comedy and moralistic drama.
Robert Levin-amNewYork

... a touching weed comedy-drama that finally captures just what it's like to put your lips to some sticky icky and breathe in a mental holiday no other experience can match.
Gabe Toro-The Playlist

It's a special movie. Odd, disjointed and not entirely coherent, but special.
Matt Zoller Seitz-RogerEbert.com

It's hard to determine exactly what Newlyweeds wants to accomplish, but it's plain to see that it fails.
Jeremy Mathews-Paste Magazine

It's difficult to deduce whether Newlyweeds is too loose, or merely designed to appear too loose...Yet the movie has a certain dark charm.
Andrew Lapin-The Dissolve

While the movie's execution never quite makes up for its conception, it does elevate it above, well, just being the sort of movie that would be called Newlyweeds.
Ignatiy Vishnevetsky-AV Club

Going neither in the direction of Reefer Madness nor a Cheech and Chong movie, it's both funny and serious, and its depictions of pot-smoking could be read as either promotional or cautionary.
Kalvin Henely-Slant Magazine

Wade might be a fish out of water among this picture-perfect East Coast clan always trying to keep up appearances, but he's not about to let himself sink. Instead, in a wild weekend of fun, dysfunction and hilarious surprises, Wade is about to discover there's room for all kinds of Peeples in this family, no matter their differences. Writer and first-time director Tina Gordon Chism (writer of DRUMLINE) joins forces with Tyler Perry to present a laugh-out-loud look at the family ties that freak us out . . . but bind us together with love. Review For Movie Peeples
Saves itself from a complete belly flop by its good-natured charm.
Laremy Legel-Film.com

Writer-director Tina Gordon Chism implies that people should accept each other for who they are, but with no genuine insight to back up this moral, it feels hollow.
Ben Sachs-Chicago Reader

The slapstick is often clunky, but Robinson has a sweet jester's disposition that keeps many of the gags from collapsing.
Peter Rainer-Christian Science Monitor

It's often rote and by-the-numbers, but writer-director Tina Gordon Chism injects the proceedings with enough smart chat, clever situations and spot-on casting choices to make this well-traveled road feel a little less stale.
Alonso Duralde-The Wrap

A meet-the-parents-and-their-rigid-disapproval comedy, with a bit of fish-out-of-water humor tossed in.
Connie Ogle-Miami Herald

Even the bouncy score sounds like it was lifted from an old Three's Company episode; that is when they're not all belting out a song about where it's not cool to pee.
Linda Barnard-Toronto Star

nothing is delved into deeper than is necessary to get to the next gag
James Luxford-The National

This messy and oftentimes obnoxious comedy relies too often on cheap humor to get its points across.
John Hanlon-Big Hollywood

It's a broad comedy about family dysfunction that provides some scattered laughs amid a story that is woefully familiar and predictable.
Todd Jorgenson-Cinemalogue.com

How did they convince Kerry Washington to be in this mess? Talk about a scandal!
Jackie K. Cooper-jackiekcooper.com

[Writer/director Tina Gordon Chism is ] good at low-key, observational humor, and the all-around excellent cast swings with aplomb from silly to sweet.
Kimberley Jones-Austin Chronicle

The arch and resolution are some indication of how utterly lifeless Peeples is, both in the sense of lacking vitality and having no real connection to how people think, feel and react to situations.
David Berry-National Post

Let's be honest -- harmless it may be, but bad it most certainly is.
Ken Hanke-Mountain Xpress (Asheville, NC)

No one looks more lost in the movie than Washington, its biggest right-this-moment star.
Michael Smith-Tulsa World

Formulaically funny, utterly familiar, fish-out-of-water story with a few absurdly engaging comedic touches.
Susan Granger-SSG Syndicate

A Tyler Perry in producer-name only, 'Peeples' is an uneven comedy with a few laughs and no surprises.
Linda Cook-Quad City Times (Davenport, IA)

Craig Robinson deserves better. So do Kerry Washington, David Alan Grier, and everyone else who stands before the camera in this clunker.
Mike McGranaghan-Aisle Seat

Funny but formulaic comedy has some edgy content.
S. Jhoanna Robledo-Common Sense Media

Pleasant, if inane - helped along by a likable cast that's clearly having fun.
Bilge Ebiri-Vulture

Better than pretty much everything else associated with Tyler Perry, but that's still not saying much. A talented cast is wasted.
Chris Bumbray-JoBlo's Movie Emporium

Surely it would have been easier to shoot in Perry's home base of Atlanta, but the significant New England location places the movie at the geographical heart of America's origin story...
John Beifuss-Commercial Appeal (Memphis, TN)

Passably endearing despite its sometimes pronounced shortcomings.
Jason Buchanan-TV Guide's Movie Guide

Given the quality of the cast,...this highly uneven, ill-constructed comedy is a disappointment.
Frank Swietek-One Guy's Opinion
